Chapters for Children

The Chapters for Children program is an annual event held on Camp Pendleton where hundreds of Marines’ families receive needed school outfits.

A Powerful Impact.

This annual event and is held in mid-August on the grounds of Camp Pendleton. Picture a huge white tent, filled with tables and clothes racks overflowing with hundreds of articles of clothing and approximately 100 Assistance League members waiting for their “customers”. Then picture hundreds of Marines’ families, each led by their volunteer personal shopper, filling their shopping bags with their free, new… and much needed… school outfits.

Joining other Assistance League chapters in San Diego, Riverside, and Orange Counties, Assistance League of North Coast distributed school clothing (socks, underwear, sweatshirt, two pairs of pants, two tops or shirts) and school supplies, including an age-appropriate dictionary, to the children of enlisted Marines stationed at the Camp.

This year 688 pre-school and K- 12 children were served.

Assistance League members served as personal shoppers with each family, helping with the selection of size, color and style of the clothing. In addition, each child received a hygiene kit and a voucher for shoes at a local shoe store. As they were leaving, each family was given a note, expressing our gratitude for their service to our country.

Finally, picture the smiles, the tears of joy and the looks of disbelief at their good fortune on the faces of these families. “Thank-you” and the other words of appreciation we received, along with the hugs and handshakes, make our efforts more than worthwhile. We can’t wait to participate next year!
